Something Freaky (12 / Jalapeno Records)

Crowd warming gold. Thessaloniki based Greek-Funk don, George Fotiadis gets busy in the studio with the Prince inspired vocals of Georges Perin and soul singer Jazzmin to create some sleaze driven early doors grime. Bad-ass funkadelic remixes from Colombo, Max Sedgley and heavy weight contender, Pimpsoul. Winners all round. 3/5
Mr No Hands – Mixmag Breaks

Basement Freaks’ soon to drop album is something lots of people are getting very excited about,
and Jalapeno ramp up the anticipation here by releasing the title track along with some storming remixes. The awesome original is about as close as you can get to a modern day prince sounding track.Think ‘Push Up’ with an extra dose of funk and you’re almost there.
Remixes come from label cohort Max Sedgley who keeps the funk levels sky high then adds a gnarly bassline to toughen things up a bit, whilst breaks don Columbo turns
in a rolling techy mix with jackin’elements that works really well.
Pimpsoul steals the show though with his trademark phat beats and even phatter basslines
to keep the ghetto-funk crowd happy.

Disco Life EP ( Jalapeno Records)

Kris Needs – DMC Update

Greece has got the nu-funk massive and leader of the pack is Thessaloniki’s George Fotiadis the man known as Basement Freaks. George has been dropping breakbeat science for nu-funk scene leaders GoodGroove , US funk breaks outpost Funk Weapons (run by All Good Funk Alliance) and Smoove’s Wack Records as well as  Washington DC’s ESL, Austria’s Innvision, San Francisco’s Aniligital, Breakbeat Paradise and Manmade. ‘Disco Life’ has original vocals by Jazzmin and George Perins. All tracks are feel-good party stompers but for me the stand-out by a mile is ‘Something Freaky’, which is hugely-funky with Prince-like vocals. If you liked ‘Push Up’ by the Free Stylers you
will love this.

Awesome 9/10
